Women of Sydney Underwater Rugby

Sydney Underwater Rugby (UWR) is launching our first women’s team with the aim of heading to the Australian National Underwater Rugby Championships. To celebrate this, new women’s members for the 2023/24 season will receive a tournament cozzie thanks to support from the NSW Office of Sport.

Joining Sydney UWR

Women’s members have the women’s team training sessions held at Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre, Saturdays from 1pm to 2pm and can join the mixed team all-inclusive training sessions held at the same pool, Saturdays from 2pm to 3pm.

We run fin swimming training sessions at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in Redfern on Wednesdays, 7pm to 8pm.

We recruit new players for both underwater rugby and finswimming all year round, with several local events and tournaments designed to introduce and challenge new players in a supportive and enjoyable environment.

Why join Sydney UWR?

We're a fun, culturally diverse and LGBTIQA+ inclusive club open to new and experienced players. Our gender diverse administration and coaching staff include international and local level athletes and coaches. We are also linguistically diverse to include fluent speakers English, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian and Thai.

When can I play?

You can play in matches internally on Saturdays (1-3pm) as a beginner or casual member. The local tournaments are run roughly once a month against teams from the University of NSW and Canberra. Sydney UWR also competes at regional and national tournaments held annually around Australia, including the National Underwater Rugby Championships.

Do I need some prior experience?

There’s no experience necessary! Most people haven’t heard of UWR let alone be experienced in the sport’s skills.

Being a strong swimmer, and comfortable with contact sports certainly has its advantages, but we have many members who have started with basic swimming abilities to grow to competing at the National Championships.

The ability to equalise is a basic safety skill which is conducted by all players before start any play at depth. There are many different ways to equalise and our coaches and experienced members are very ready to help you learn all of the skills required.

I'm keen! What do I do?

The best way to get into Sydney UWR is to contact our social media pages. We can prepare clean fins, masks and caps for you to use for training.
